Try It! Zentangles with Joyce Francis
Thursday, May 10 5:30-7:30pm

Leave your stress at the door and prepare to enjoy a hands-on demonstration of the meditative art form called Zentangle. Zentangle is a meditative drawing art form that uses repetitive patterns.  The end result is a calm, focused mind with the added bonus of a beautiful piece of artwork.

Zentangle was created by a Massachusetts couple, Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts, who stumbled upon the meditative beauty of drawing repetitive patterns. Over the past several years it has spread around the world and taken root in a variety of settings. By the end of the demonstration you will have a beautiful piece of art and you’ll have learned a technique you can use any time or place to relax, meditate and focus on the moment.

Joyce Francis is a calligrapher and paper artist living in Northfield, Minnesota.  A maniac for color, she has a lifetime love of paper, ink, and letters.  Over the years her work has expanded beyond calligraphy into development of a line of cards and prints featuring her paper batik artwork, the “Northfield Fairies,” and her newest creation of Zentangle-inspired cards. Joyce has been published nationally in “Cloth, Paper, Scissors” magazine.  “Waxography,” the technique she invented for lettering and drawing with hot wax, was featured along with samples of her artwork.  She has also self-published a manual which gives detailed instructions for her “Waxography.” Her website is www.JoyceEFrancis.com

Try It! Stillman & Birn Sketchbooks with Michael Kalman & Liz Carlson
Thursday, May 24, 5:30-7:30pm

Stillman and Birn makes archival quality premium hardbound and spiral sketchbooks for dry or wet media.  Their founder, Philip Birn was a highly admired Viennese book binder who brought the “old world” craftsmanship to a small plant in the SoHo section of Manhattan. He pioneered the concept of the black hardbound sketchbook in the 1950s.

Michael Kalman was inspired by Philip Birn to produce sketchbooks of the same superior quality. Come experience this paper for yourself! Drawings for free sketch books will be held throughout the evening.

Liz Carlson of the Wet Paint floor staff has been using them for some of her wonderful mixed media illustrations of birds with great success. You can find examples of her work at her Facebook artist's page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Liz-Carlson-Arts-and-Illustration/369925849700286 .
