REFLECTIONS ON GAMBLIN RADIANT COLOR

BY PAUL DAMON

Until recently, I assumed the Gamblin Radiant colors were simply some bright fluorescent colors that would have no place in my palette. In fact, the Radiant colors are created to demonstrate older classic painting techniques that can result in richer, deeper colors. Gamblin presents three painting techniques employing the Radiants modeled after the work of daVinci, Turner, & Monet.

What are the Radiant colors? The Radiant colors are pure colors (monopigments) that have been mixed with whites to create a color tint at value (relative lightness) number seven in the Munsell color system. With all Radiants being the same value, they make a standard of reference that can be used for a value-based painting approach. For example, all of the radiants can be used in the high value areas of a painting, with the lower & mid-value areas created by mixing in black, white, grey, or complementary colors. There are many possibilities, three of which are explored in Gamblin’s Radiant color brochure, the basis for my studies pictured here.

Gamblin Radiant Colors: The Turner Method

DaVinci’s method consists of using the Radiant colors for the mid-values, with white & black added for the respective high & low value areas. This is used as an underpainting for subsequent glazes, again adding black for the low values. The result is solidly modeled forms of deep colors.

Gamblin Radiant Colors: The Turner Method

Turner’s method is explored by using the Radiant colors right out of the tube as the lowest values in a painting. Tints are formed by adding white for the mid-values, then more white is added to create the highest values. No black or grey is used. This is again used as an underpainting for glazes of pure colors & Galkyd Lite. The result is a rich high value painting with glowing colors.

Gamblin Radiant Colors: The Monet Method

Monet’s method uses direct painting, there is no black or white added, & there is no glazing. The Radiant colors are applied to the highest value areas. The mid- & low value areas are created by mixing the Radiant colors with their respective complements to form softly glowing greys. The result is a light, ephemeral color scheme.

These painting methods are only three examples of the many approaches one could use with the Radiant colors. Not simply a bunch of bright colors, the Radiants offer the opportunity to strategically apply value-based approaches to oil painting, & they have found a place on my palette.

R&F Encaustic Paints

R&F Encaustic Paints

Encaustic paint is composed of pigment, beeswax & resin. It is applied molten to a surface & fused to create a lustrous enamel effect. It is among the most durable of all artists’ paints, since wax is impervious to moisture & over time retains all the freshness of a newly finished work.

R&F Encaustic Palette

What particularly attracts modern painters working in contemporary or traditional styles is the spontaneity & variety with which encaustic can be used. Encaustic paint cools in minutes. Additional layers can be added immediately.

R&F Encaustics

Once the surface has cooled, the paint has reached a permanent finish, but the painting can also be revised & reworked at any time -- whether seconds or years later.

R&F Encaustic Iridescent Gold

Encaustic can be applied in delicately thin glazes or super thick impastos. It can be carved, shaped & molded -- built to high or low relief. Its adhesiveness makes it an excellent collage medium that can be impregnated with foils, paper, glitter, string, found objects, & many other things.

The surface quality of encaustic paint can be left rough & matte or worked to a semi-gloss or lustrous high-gloss enamel like finish. Encaustic painting does not require solvents of any kind. As a result, a number of health hazards are reduced or eliminated.

R&F Spatula Head Iron

Wet Paint has added R&F encaustics & their encaustic tools, including beeswax, medium, heated spatula & various heads, temperature regulator, heat gun & a fine introductory set. We have stocked their popular R&F Pigment Sticks for many years. Encaustics need to be applied to a rigid substrate such as a panel or hard board.
