Casein is one of the most interesting, yet overlooked paint mediums. It is very fast drying & is water thinable & resoluble. If you have made a mistake you can use a wet brush & a paper towel to carefully remove it.
Casein may be applied to a number of surfaces including paper, masonite, wood & canvas. Used since Egyptian times, casein is very durable once dry. It does, however, form a brittle film which requires a firm support. Casein applied to any canvas or paper should be mounted to a rigid panel & not stretched on a frame. It can be used in transparent, watercolor like washes; built up in heavy, opaque, matte strokes; or, when extended with casein medium, used to create luminous oil like glazes.
What’s more, it works famously as underpainting for oils.
Like an oil painting, casein cures to a strong impermeable film in about six months, but works of art prepared in casein are traditionally buffed to a nice sheen & framed behind glass rather than varnishing.
Shiva Signa-Sein by Jack Richeson is the only manufactured artist grade casein color line & besides the colors, we offer a medium & a retouch varnish that you can use for isolating layers. We also offer a starter set.
I especially recommend Permasol Blue for glowing skies & Halftone Black to mimic half-tones.
