Out of the oldest paper mill in Europe comes two new lines
of professional watercolor paper -- and a wee bit of confusion
for the artist.
Fabriano has discontinued its UNO and Artistico lines of watercolor paper. In their
stead, the longstanding paper mill has developed two new lines
of professional watercolor paper: Artistico Traditional
White and Artistico Extra White. These
new papers are a hybrid of the Uno and old Artistico,
blending various attributes while maintaining some of the key
features that we’ve come to expect from Fabriano.
Both Artistico sheets are still 100% cotton
and mouldmade, acid-free, and completely deckle-edged, but some
differences have emerged -- chiefly those regarding color and
surface texture.
The Artistico Traditional White is a slightly
buttery soft white color. Available in three weights (90-, 140-,
and 300-lb), and three surfaces (hot, cold, and rough), Artistico
Traditional retains many of the old Artistico properties.
The surface of the new hot press is identical to that of the old
Artistico, but the textures of the cold and rough presses have
changed. The old Artistico cold press had a unique surface that
resembled a weave akin to linen, yet was neither laid nor wove.
In the shuffling of features that produced the new Artistico,
that surface apparently has been lost.
With Uno, Fabriano introduced a soft press surface -- a completely unique surface with a texture that falls somewhere
between hot and cold press. This surface -- exclusive to the Fabriano
mill -- has been carried over into the new Artistico Extra White.
A nice bright versatile white, the Artistico Extra White is available
in two weights (140- and 300-lb) and four surfaces (hot, cold,
soft, and rough). The new hot and soft presses mimic their previous
Uno counterparts, but the new Artistico Extra White cold and rough
presses offer more texture. The new cold press is comparable to
the old Uno rough press, while an entirely new and enhanced rough
press has been created to finish off the Artistico Extra White
line.
These new papers have just arrived and we are
just beginning to experiment. Please stop in and take a look at
the samples.
