The Story of Golden Artist Colors
Sam Golden, the namesake of Golden Artist Colors, began his lifetime in the artists’ materials industry during the 1930’s when he joined his uncle Leonard Bocour at Bocour Artist Colors in New York City. Many of the great New York School artists of the mid-century used Bocour’s Bellini oil paint, but advancements in plastics technologies after World War II were making artists’ paints created with polymer resins a viable alternative for the next wave of painters. Bocour & Golden called their newly developed fast drying acrylic Magna. Unlike acrylic paint of today, it was soluble in turpentine or mineral spirits. By 1960, water based acrylic technology had improved to the point where Bocour introduced Aqua-Tec Acrylic as a water miscible alternative to Magna.

Sam’s retirement to upstate New York in the early 1970’s didn’t last long. By 1980, Sam & his son Mark, with the assistance of Sam’s wife Adele & Mark’s wife Barbara & partner Chuck Kelly, began producing acrylic paint in his New Berlin cow barn under the name of Golden Artist Colors, Inc. The popularity of the original Heavy Body acrylics quickly spawned the development of more unique product lines, resulting in additions to the barn to nearly eight times the original size in 1985, doubling the size again in 1990 and, most recently adding 31,000 more square feet in 1997.
Today, Mark Golden, CEO of Golden Artist Colors, has a simple mission statement that drives his company: “To grow a sustainable company dedicated to creating & sharing the most imaginative & innovative tools of color, line & texture for inspiring those who turn their vision into reality.”

The Story of Gamblin
The story of Gamblin Artists Colors Company is well known. Painter Robert Gamblin was so committed to the quality of oil paint he was using in his own paintings that he started making his own paint in his garage. This was not a casual undertaking. Robert devoted the entire first year solely to perfecting the formulas for white paint! His efforts were particularly focused on removing the most toxic elements from the oil painter’s studio. Gamblin was the first to develop a replacement for lead white paint, and his Gamsol solvent sets the industry standard for permissible exposure level. Over 25 years after his first forays into color making, Robert Gamblin’s oil paint & mediums are some of the best known, and best selling, ranges at Wet Paint.

Lesser known, perhaps, are Gamblin’s contributions to artists’ education. The Gamblin color chart is divided into mineral & organic colors; a separation that clearly divides the warmer, opaque colors from the predominantly cooler, transparent ones. This deceptively simple format allows the artist to make informed color choices based on their needs. A review of the Gamblin color system has prompted more than one Wet Paint employee to remark that they had just learned more about color in ten minutes than in four years of art school!

Since so much has been written about Gamblin (the man & the company) over the years, Pete Cole, President of Gamblin Artists Colors Co, wanted to share a few anecdotes that you may not have heard: “Gamblin’s commitment to studio safety & environmental sustainability takes many forms,” says Mr. Cole. “Last year, Gamblin gave away over 15,000 tubes of Torrit Grey, our unique oil color made from the artists’ pigment reclaimed from our filtration system. Also, our employees log over 25, 000 miles annually on bicycle or public transportation, rather than driving to work.”
Out of Robert’s passion for painting & paint making has grown a responsible, progressive company that honors the past while continually breaking new ground.

The Story of Holbein

In 1962 Peter Hopper assumed the Presidency of Hughes-Owens Ltd., a large Canadian company involved in engineering, drafting & art materials distribution. Hopper, who had a passion for painting & drawing as a young man, was drawn to the artists’ materials industry by this zeal for fine arts. The company prospered under his direction & further fostered his passion & love for the art material trade.

During one of his many business trips abroad, Peter met Mr. Thoru Yoshimura, President & Chairman of Holbein Art Materials from Osaka, Japan. At this time, Holbein was a well established & respected manufacturer of artists’ supplies in Japan, but was not well represented in America. Peter was so impressed with the quality of the Holbein product line that in 1977 he left Hughes-Owens & started Hopper-Koch the exclusive North American distributor of all Holbein Products.

The company changed its name to HK Holbein in 1980 to more closely identify the company with its primary product line. Peter’s wife, Frances, along with Barbara Mackay, Vice President of HK Holbein Canada & Danny Arseneault, Canadian National Sales Manager were essential in helping Peter establish Holbein as a prominent line in North America.

Today, the Hopper family continues its dedication to providing the American artist with the finest in Japanese color & supplies. Two of Peter’s sons, Douglas (President) & Timothy (Executive Vice President), run HK Holbein & maintain the continued close ties with Osaka, while Peter remains active as the Chairman of HK Holbein.
Wet Paint stocks the full range of Holbein’s artists’ oil color, artists’ watercolor paint, Irodori artists’ watercolor, Duo water soluble oil color, Acryla gouache, oil & soft pastels & a number of other fine accessories.
