The Story of Escoda
2008 marks the 75th anniversary of the Escoda Brush Company. Their goal, now as when they started, is to make the very best brush possible for the fine artist. The Escoda family’s consistent commitment to excellence has earned the firm the prestigious Quality Certificate ISO 9001. This is a very rare & distinguished achievement for an art materials manufacturer & Escoda is the first brush maker in Europe to earn this recognition.
The Escoda factory, 15 miles outside of Barcelona, employs over 30 brushmaking professionals, each of whom has years of practice & experience in their respective specialty, from grading of raw materials to hand-shaping & assembling the brushes to packaging & shipping. Each brush is made by hand, one at a time. Uniquely, Escoda “cures” each brush with an exclusive process unknown & unavailable to any other manufacturer. This builds a memory into each brush allowing it to keep its shape & enhance the desired natural characteristics of the fine hairs or synthetic filaments. Additionally, each ferrule is crimped three times, permanently securing it to the handle, another practice exclusive to Escoda.
Even under the watchful eye of seasoned professionals, the occasional tiny production defect will occur. Any Escoda brush that does not comply with the demanding quality controls dictated by Quality Certificate ISO 9001 is donated to a charity for people “at difficult & solitary times in their lives.”

The Story of Ladd Forsline

Ladd Forsline, a native of Minnesota, is an artist & inventor. He graduated from Bethel College (MN) in 1986 & received his MFA from Yale School of Art in 1988. He then moved to New York City & set up Forsline & Starr Ltd, the company behind such inventions as Colour Shaper® & OilBar®. These products, which were revolutionary at the time of launch, have now become standard tools & materials for artists & crafters around the world.
Ladd now lives in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, where he developed & is manufacturing his latest new product range – PanPastel™ - a collaboration with his wife & business partner, Bernadette Ward. PanPastel is transforming the way artists use pastels.
Ladd says that his “intention is not to replace existing materials, but to enhance the process of making art by offering new materials & stimulating artistic expression.” Something most artists agree he has successfully achieved!
ColourShapers

Three different levels of firmness allow for a myriad of techniques, from applying & blending pastels (soft), to moving & removing paint (firm), to sculpting & ceramics (clay). The Story of Silver Brush
Deirdra (Dee) Silver started in artists’ materials in 1964 in New York City at the very busy retail location of Joseph Mayer Co. on Union Square. Dee remained an artists’ materials retailer until she became a manufacturer’s representative in 1979. One of the lines she represented was a manufacturer of premium artists’ brushes. In 1990, as that manufacturer slid into bankruptcy due to mismanagement, Dee saw an opportunity to start her own artist brush business, a company that would reflect her knowledge, experience & dedication to superior quality & one that would have her name on it. Thus, Silver Brush was born.
Dee says, “Unlike most products sold to consumers today, artist brushes, in our quality class, are still manufactured, for the most part, by hand. Brushes are made by artisans who have apprenticed with master brush makers, for very long periods of time.”
Since its founding, Silver has added many very popular series to its already extensive selection. Natural hair brushes such as those made from hog bristle, sable, ox, squirrel & pony hair are all part of their product mix. Synthetic materials, once considered inferior, have now gained prominence in the market place as filament design & construction have advanced.
“Today we use Taklon, Risslon & Interlon synthetics in our brushes in both long & short handle versions. They have great resiliency & longevity. They are a far cry from the early days of this type of artist brush,” says Dee.
“As I travel around the states & overseas I am consistently looking for products artists can use to their benefit. I always ask ‘How will the artist use this & who is the artist that needs this?’ The brushmakers that make our products are the most experienced. Hence the quality that we offer from Grand Prix® to Sterling Studio® is the best in their class.”

The Story of Watermen Art

Bill Hudson designed the first Mahl Bridge 5 years ago out of necessity. As a marine artist, he needed something to provide arm support & hold draftsman profiles (ship's curves, straight edges, etc.) above the surface of the painting. Other artists, both oil painters & watercolorists, began asking Bill to make them a Mahl Bridge, and the business was born.
Bill & his wife of 38 years, Ellie, raised eight children in southern California, all of whom were involved in local & college athletics, be it dance, soccer and/or baseball. The "kids" are grown now, having become teachers, firefighters, entrepreneurs, professional athletes & parents (five grandchildren so far); two have become business associates. Son Will (who has recently retired from baseball with the Cincinnati Reds) became his Dad's business partner & he was soon refining the bridge as he manufactured them in the garage at home. Shipping, advertising, packaging- all fell into Will's expert hands. Will’s brother Luke took charge of the marketing while pitching with the Kansas City Royals.
As the business has overgrown the garage, so has the family involvement, hopefully leaving another Hudson legacy!
