My Favorite Brush

With every brush on sale at Wet Paint during the "Make Your Mark" sale, which one do you choose? The Wet Paint staff weigh in with their faves...

Signet Round Bristle Brush

Beth Bergman: “The Signet by Robert Simmons (now brought to us by Daler-Rowney) is the workhorse bristle brush. Moderately priced, it holds up for the tough oil painter. The series includes all the shapes for the easel painter: Flats, Brights, Rounds & Filberts. The Signet Series also offers Egberts & Fans. They also make odd numbered sizes up to #11.”

Monarch Brushes by Winsor & Newton

Verra Blough: “Like the beautiful Monarch butterfly, my favorite brush is the Monarch from Winsor & Newton. It handles with ease-- I use it for acrylic glazing & blending. It seems to do what I want it to do. The brush itself is a pretty brush-- a long wood grain handle with a synthetic mongoose hair.”

Escoda Tame

Liz Carlson: “I’m torn between two Escoda lines: the Escoda Tame, a short handle for watercolor or acrylic; & the Escoda Tadami, a long handle for acrylic. The Tames have worked wonderfully for details. They hold their shape & a lot of pigment or color. The Tadami series is wonderful for acrylic because the bristles are firmly packed to push color, yet are soft for glazing. Plus, both of these series clean up very easily with just soap & water, which makes taking care of them easy & quick, so they should last a long time.”

Escoda Tadami

Paul Damon: “My favorite brush is the Silver Grand Prix Round #10-- it has grown into my favorite brush because over time it has flattened out on one side & the fibers have splayed-- it makes it easy to apply paint with dry brush techniques.”

Silver Bristlon

Kristina Fjellman: “For oil & acrylics: the Silver Bristlon. For watercolor: the Escoda Tajmyr Kolinsky. The Bristlon because it is a snappy, stiff bristle brush that can move heavy bodied paints & it keeps it shape when I work with it harshly. The Tajmyr is a nice Kolinsky sable, but not quite as expensive as the other fancy Kolinsky brushes. I think it has a nice stroke, holds its shape well & is a good workhorse brush for me.”

Princeton 6300 Brush

Gregory Graham: “My favorite brush is the Princeton 6300 long handle synthetic. I like it because it’s the best. It holds paint, lays it down the way you like & has the best shape retention of any acrylic brush I’ve ever used. It is always my first recommendation for acrylic painting.”

Raphael 8404 Kolinsky Brush

Tim Jennen: “If you dig through interviews with prominent cartoonists for mention of their brush of choice, you’ll find a lot of them generally using & recommending a certain Kolinsky brush of note. I like the other one, the brush a handful of the elect have discovered & enjoy for ink work-- the Raphael 8404, a sable brush with a friendly head that allows terrific control & holds & lays ink beautifully. An excellent, but under-appreciated high-quality brush. (And I second Liz’ recommendation of the Escoda Tame as a synthetic alternative.)”

ColourShapers

Donnie Jones: “My favorite ‘brush’ is the entire line of Colour Shapers. I like them because they are very unique & have tons of uses. They are perfect for moving paints around on a surface. They are great for acrylics with texture mediums or clay. The big flat ones have the ability to move big areas of paint or gesso.”

Winsor & Newton Series 7

Kate Katzer: “My favorite brush is the Winsor & Newton Series 7 Miniature. Great point & load-- Lovely!”

Virginia McBride: “My favorite brush is the Jack Richeson 8000 Series. This brush is a solid, affordable everyday brush that snaps back to attention reliably. I use it with water-soluble graphite & watercolor pencils.”

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

Anna Miller: “My favorite brush is the Pentel Pocket Brush Pen. I do mostly pen drawings with a small brush, so this pen is great for me. It’s fully portable. I don’t need to carry an inkwell & brush around with me. All I need is my pen & a pad of paper. The brush pen is very durable. I’ve been using it for a year almost daily & it’s still in perfect condition. It’s also the perfect size. It allows control as well as broad, expressive strokes. It’s the perfect drawing/painting tool for someone like me who doesn’t like a lot of clutter to worry about.”

Silverwhite brushes by Silver

Aaron Reiners: “My favorite brush is the Silverwhite by Silver Brush. Its silver-grey handle isn’t distracting like red, green or blue handles. Great for acrylic & watercolor alike. Also, I prefer white synthetic--I can tell when it’s clean more easily than with golden synthetics. The filament is a good medium stiffness. Not too stiff or too soft.”

Isabey 6116 Brush

Justin Terlecki: “My favorite brush is the Isabey Series 6116 Kolinsky Sable Oil round. I like this series because the brushes contain the finest natural Kolinsky hair, thus giving them durability & excellent shape retention. I love the Round #8 especially for executing fineline details when using oil paints.”
