Emmanuel Poiré (1859-1909) was a prominent Russian-born, French caricaturist who signed his work “Caran d’Ache”. To him, it was a “French” styling of the Russian word for pencil, karandash. Poiré is considered a seminal figure in the history of comics art, and his drawings can be found in various anthologies.
