Nib City

The Surge in Popularity of Both Traditional and Modern Nibs & Nibholders Suggests that Many Artists have Found a New Comfort Zone with Pen & Ink

When we brought in a display of Japanese manga nibs three years ago, a few of us at Wet Paint were surprised by the excited reception that they inspired. Marketed as a professional series of cartooning nibs, soon calligraphers and other artists discovered their unique benefits. The reputation of the amazing G-pen nib received a major boost when Spenserian calligrapher Michael Sull extolled its virtues. We brought in a second display of Japanese calligraphy nibs and found them to be as beautifully made as their manga counterparts.

Wet Paint has always had a strong commitment to finding unique drawing tools. With these new nibs, manufacturers have developed some interesting penholders. Some artists create their own pens, such as Jim Chin’s Moth and Butterfly pens featured on this page. And regular readers of this newsletter will recognize local book artist
Denny Ruud’s handcut quill.

American-made Speedball nibs continue to be favored by artists, educators and customers, with their wide range of specialty applications and consistent quality. Wet Paint carries nearly 50 different nibs, including left-handed nibs for southpaws, from this venerable North Carolinan company.

The Classic: the Koh-i-Noor Corkgrip #127N penholder, here loaded with Speedball’s Hunt 512 bowl nib. A great drawing combination-- and a joy to hold.

The formidable Japanese nibs, lead by the G-pen nib. Handmade, beautifully crafted, and capable of a variety of lines that lay smoothly on the page.

The Tachikawa Dual Penholder: a veritable hit with customers and the Wet Paint staff, this holder features two concentric rings for interchanging a larger nib with the Japanese maru nib. Now available with a grip as well.

To be honest, we’ve seen some strange applications of ergonomics in the art materials industry, but here’s a case where a trigrip makes perfect sense: the very comfortable-- and beautifully stained-- Brause Ergonomic Penholder

With apologies to Sigmund Freud, sometimes a cigar is just a ... penholder. Brause’s Cigare Penholder is the answer for those artists who prefer a fuller barrel.

Jim Chin’s Moth & Butterfly Pens: These folded brass pens were created by Chicago calligrapher Jim Chin and allow for an incredible variation of line without lifting the pen from the paper.

Dennis Ruud’s Quill Pen: A favorite from our holiday sale-- handcut goose quills by a local artist, calligrapher & bookmaker.

Hidden Treasures: Three great pointed nibs for drawing and copperplate you will find in Wet Paint’s nib drawer-- The EF Principal; the Gillott 303; and the Brause EF 66.
