Here Comes Solucryl Acrylic

What is Solucryl? Solucryl behaves like a poster paint, but with the color & versatility of an acrylic.
How do you use Solucryl? You can use it right out of the bottle, mix it on palettes, or pour it into plastic cups & allow to dry for use as a tempera block. Solucryl used this way will instantly re-moisten for re-use. You can add Solucryl Resoluble Medium to extend colors & aid in mixing, or you can use Solucryl Permanent Medium to make the color permanent.
Solucryl will fit any budget. This economical palette of 20 colours is designed for use by anyone from school-aged children to seniors in a huge variety of applications.
These colors are vibrant, virtually odorless, non-toxic & best of all, resoluble. Solucryl dries matte, semi-opaque & remains flexible without dusting or flaking. Solucryl can also be used for monoprinting, screen printing, fabric painting, paper marbling & airbrushing.
Solucryl is a great classroom paint: one paint for many uses!

Safe Studio Month

Cold temperatures have arrived & with them, our annual reminder on safe studio practices for the oil painter. Robert Gamblin, founder of Gamblin Artists Colors, is perhaps the art materials industry’s leading advocate for the manufacture of non-toxic oil painting supplies. The most toxic element of the traditional painter’s palette is turpentine. Turpentine evaporates very quickly & therefore has an extremely low Permissible Exposure Level (PEL); PEL is a standard that rates how long one can safely be exposed to a chemical.
Turpentine is also a known respiratory irritant & causes nausea, dermatitis, kidney & bladder disease & asthma. Let’s avoid turpentine!

Gamsol is Gamblin’s 100% pure odorless mineral spirits. Gamsol evaporates slowly, giving it a PEL 3 times higher than that of turpentine. All Gamblin painting mediums have been formulated for greater safety by replacing traditional turpentine solutions with mediums created with Gamsol; let’s briefly review their properties:

Galkyd speeds the drying time of oil paints & increases their flexibility. Brush strokes will tend to level, as with a traditional stand oil medium.

Galkyd Lite also speeds the drying time of oils but is less viscous-similar to a traditional linseed oil medium that leaves evident brush strokes.

Galkyd Slow Dry, as the name implies, is a “wet into wet” medium that extends the paint film & it’s drying time.
Galkyd Gel (G-Gel) is an impasto medium that allows the artist to create dense paint films without worry for curing issues.
Remember that along with minimizing, or eliminating, turpentine from your studio, it is crucial to have proper ventilation to truly have a “safe” studio. Changing the air in your studio ten times per hour is a good guideline.
All Gamsol & Gamblin painting mediums are on sale through the end of February!
