Golden Artist Colors, Inc. offers a wide
variety of gel mediums to mix with your acrylic
paints. If you are stuck in a rut and can’t seem to turn
your acrylics into magic, maybe you need to open the door and step into
the wonders of gel mediums.
The most common medium is the matte medium, which
is an excellent way to achieve consistency in sheen in painting. Matte
medium is fairly liquid in state and should be mixed
with your paint colors no more than 1:1 (unless you
are striving for transparency). Gel mediums, which
range from soft gels to extra heavy gels,
are formulated with 100% acrylic polymer emulsion.
These gels are useful for creating 'oil paint’-like effects such
as sgraffito, wet into wet, and transparent
glazing. Extra heavy gels and high solid gels are excellent for thick impasto strokes. The heavier
gels hold each stroke exactly as you painted it. These mediums are also
great as adhesives; therefore, collage can easily be combined with your painting.
Unusual gel mediums, such as pumice gels, garnet gels,
and tar gels allow you, the painter, to experiment
with many different techniques. With these options, you can make your
paint look like cement on a sidewalk, shimmering jewels, the Grand Canyon,
or hot fudge.
Come in and look at our gel mediums. Talk to one of us about them.
