New Japanese Papers & Products

Thanks to the generous tutelage of Nancy Jacobi, founder of the Toronto based Japanese Paper Place, we’ve expanded our offering of Japanese printing & decorative papers to include some of the finest handmade & pure-fibered sheets available in the world today.

Whether you’re looking for strength, translucency, rich color, fine texture, or delightful decorative prints, you’re sure to find something exciting among our collection of new papers.
The Japanese Paper Place strives to preserve & support the traditional papermaking processes that are quickly disappearing in Japan. As expert papermakers retire, fewer & fewer young folks are choosing to take up the trade. The loss of expert practices & fine craftsmanship is replaced by newer machine made technologies that simply cannot mimic the subtle, unique characteristics of handmade papers.

Nancy & the folks at Japanese Paper Place not only encourage the families who’ve made paper for generations, but have sought out the papers of new, enthusiastic young people who’ve elected to take up the trade. As you look through our selection, you’ll be able to learn about the various properties of handmade papers – to feel the added warmth, strength, flexibility & sheer beauty of these crafted sheets – & know that each purchase is helping to keep the art of papermaking alive in Japan.
Come visit our paper counter to learn more about these intriguing papers. Whether you’re interested in printing, collage, calligraphy, origami, drawing, painting, or decorating, you’re sure to enjoy these gorgeous new papers!
In addition to the lovely sheet papers that have been added in the last few weeks, we’ve got a few unique products that paper lovers should know about – Konnyaku starch (from the devil’s tongue root): used to coat papers for added strength & flexibility as well as increased wind & water resistance. Papers treated with Konnyaku such as momigami (kneaded paper) & kyoseishi (strong paper) have been used for centuries in the making of paper clothing & as a lining for textiles. Konnyaku starch is now available at Wet Paint in 100gram increments.
Kaki Shibu, processed from the juice of unripe persimmon fruit, is another traditional treatment that will enhance & extend the regular properties of paper. In addition to obtaining a lovely deep brownish/red color that will deepen over time, papers treated with Kaki Shibu are strengthened, become water-resistant, & curiously, will repel insects! This makes an excellent stencil paper as well as, when treated with oil, a waterproof paper for making umbrellas! Kaki Shibu dye is available at Wet Paint in 25 gram increments.
Teeny-Tiny assorted (4cm), & Foil (5cm) origami packs are here! Also, beautiful new Japanese fine stationery for those extra special projects (available at our paper counter) & an extra-fine jar of paper & collage paste from Yamato.
