The Japanese Nibs
at Wet Paint

When we brought in a display of Japanese manga nibs a few years ago, some of us at Wet Paint were surprised by the excited reception that they inspired. Marketed as a professional series of cartooning nibs, soon calligraphers and other artists discovered their unique benefits. We have also found that certain nibs-- such as the Zebra maru nib-- have found fans among artists other than cartoonists.

The reputation of the amazing G-pen nib received a major boost when Spenserian calligrapher Michael Sull extolled its virtues. We brought in a different display of Japanese calligraphy nibs and found them to be as beautifully made as their manga counterparts.

We carry these nibs from three major manufacturers in Japan: Nikko, Tachikawa, and Zebra. You will find each type of nib very similar between these manufacturers, and in all cases, the quality and consistency of the working properties of these nibs is very high. Still, many people discover personal preferences between the manufacturers, so we offer all three.

Enjoy this all-too-brief introduction to these wonderful nibs. The fun part is experiencing them for yourself. You can now find them for sale online here at Wet Paint.

MANGA

The G-Pen

The most popular of the Japanese nibs. Loved by calligraphers for Spencerian / Copperplate writing. Capable of a variety of lines, from bold down to very fine. Great drawing nib! Very flexible. Many Manga cartoonists use this nib for their main drawing and for "effect" lines such as a flash line.

Available in three packs from Nikko and Tachikawa; and five packs from Zebra.

Available in three packs from Nikko and Tachikawa; and five packs from Zebra.

School Pen

The pen point on the School Pen nib is slightly softer, and the lines produced, a little bolder. Chrome-plated. Good for hard lines.

Available in three packs from Nikko and Tachikawa.

Nihon-Moji

A very nice nib for comics lettering, with a flattened bowl for greater stability. "Nihon" means "Japan" and "moji" means "letter, as in a letter from the alphabet". Thus: a good lettering nib for your captions. Chrome-plated.

Available in three-packs from Nikko and Tachikawa.

Maru

A smaller tube nib, similar to the crow quill nib. The Maru ("circle" or round) nib is good for drawing stable lines and for detailing. Also good for drawing details such as hair, folds of clothes, or inside of pupils.

Available in two-packs from Nikko and Tachikawa; and five-packs from Zebra.
