The French easel is a wooden carrying box and easel all in one. It is the traditional “Plein Air” easel for field work. French easels are available from several sources, but we have narrowed our selection at Wet Paint to three models that we feel strongly about: MABEF, Paragon and ProArt.
The Italian company MABEF has been producing easels made of solid beechwood and brass fittings for over 60 years. MABEF’s dedication to the highest quality materials, and their sole focus on easels and wooden accessories for artists, makes them the premiere range of French easels at Wet Paint. MABEF offers a traditional “full” French easel, as well as a half-size easel with built in backpack straps for better portability. Both feature drawers with removable metal linings.
The Paragon full French easel is produced from elm wood in the Pacific Northwest.
It has a unique design featuring a canvas holder that is uniformly flat across its face, allowing for better stability of small scale paintings. The canvas holder also extends to allow easy access into the storage box without opening the drawer.
The Paragon is perhaps a less elegant, but more utilitarian easel.
The economy version of the French style easel at Wet Paint is from ProArt. It is smaller than the MABEF, yet is still made of oiled beechwood, unlike other less expensive models on the market.
This easel is made in the Far East and is great for an artist’s first ventures into the world of outdoor painting. The most unique feature of the ProArt French easel is a built in level which helps you find the exact pitch for the easel legs when setting up in the field.
