| AMPERSAND CLAYBORD |
|
This museum quality panel is coated with a smooth absorbent clay ground comparable to the clay gesso grounds used during the Renaissance. Archival, lightfast, and acid free, the panels are ideal for acrylics, gouache, tempera, egg tempera, pen and inks as well as for mixed media techniques, airbrush, and collage. The surface is additive and subtractive. Remove paints to add contrast, texture, tonal value and fine details. Perfect for any artwork that requires an extremely smooth surface. Claybord is available in a 1/8" flat panel, a 3/4" cradle or with a 2" Deep Cradle.

AMPERSAND GESSOBORD
|
|
Save hours of applying and sanding gesso with perfectly hand-crafted Gessobord. The thick acrylic polymer gesso ground has been sanded to an exceptional finish you’ll love. Perfect for layering, glazing, alla prima and impasto in oils, acrylics, alkyds or water-based oils. The surface is pH neutral and acid free.
Gessobord is available with Ampersand's innovative and elegant cradles that provide extra support and presentation all in one. The DEEP Cradle panels come with 2" birch plywood strips that are attached flush with the back edge of each panel.
The original cradled panels come with the thinner 3/4" birch plywood strips and can be framed like a standard size canvas or can be hung directly on the wall without additional framing. The plywood sides can be stained, painted, gessoed, waxed or left unfinished to customize and enhance your work.
Both cradle versions can either be used to paint on directly or as supports on which to mount watercolor papers, photographs, fabrics and prints. The cradled panels will save you valuable painting time, as well as framing and carpentry costs! |

| AMPERSAND AQUABORD |
|
Aquabord is a clay coated hardboard panel that gives watercolorists unprecedented freedom and control. Comparable to watercolor paper, this multimedia panel simulates the absorbency and texture of cold pressed but allows color to be lifted back to white easily while also leaving the richest, most vibrant color possible. This reworkable surface provides natural looking highlights, fluid glazes, transparent subtle layers, and the ability to lift color while the surface is wet or even after it is dry.
The truly amazing part is that finished watercolors can be sealed with Claybord Fixative and displayed without glass! |

| The Ampersand Story |
|
Did you know that Wet Paint owner Beth Bergman was one of the very first retailers in the country to bring Ampersand’s Claybord into her store nearly 13 years ago? That’s right. This trend setting store took a chance & introduced artists to what would become one of many popular surfaces offered by Ampersand Art. Elaine Salazar, president of Ampersand, fondly recalls trying to pitch this “unique” surface to Beth only to find that she had already discovered it! Beth said to her, “Do you mean ‘Claybord – Really Neat Stuff’?” That was the name & catch phrase on the first package that artist Charles Ewing had created when he & his wife Barbara started to market the surface that he had created for his own use.
After producing a few batches of Claybord in his shed, in 1993, Charles Ewing & Elaine Salazar founded Ampersand Art Supply to manufacture & market not only Claybord, but to create a movement to revive the time-honored tradition of panel painting. Up to this point, no one had ventured into this area to research wood substrates & figure out how to seal & coat them with grounds that artists would love. With a steadfast commitment to archival principles, Elaine & Charles tested countless wood surfaces to find the most dimensionally stable base for their grounds & developed a unique method for sealing their premium hardboard.
Then came the fun part: creating wonderful grounds such as Gessobord, Aquabord & Pastelbord that are the hallmark of their panels. All of Ampersand’s Museum panels are hand made in their small factory in Austin, Texas where an employee (not a machine) has created & touched each panel with the same tender loving care that Elaine & Charles used to create the first Claybord. |
